I’m looking to find out some information on document management solutions, but I’m having a hard time figuring out what I should be looking for.  Basically I have very little business experience, but I’ve been asked to help a friend out with a business that he’s recently purchased.

The company’s documents are in pretty rough shape, and as far as I can tell there isn’t any kind of filing system in place.  Things are just kind of shoved here and there and finding anything is impossible. Documents are also stored on site and off, making things even more confusing.

Everything is hard copied, with no electronic documentation at all.  My friend wants to look into implementing one or two electronic document management systems to help organize things in a more efficient manner and I volunteered to help out with some of the research.

I’ve started doing some online research, but I want to make sure that I’m heading in the right direction.  If anyone can help me out, that would be great.  He wants to do this as cheaply as possible and I want to make sure that any suggestions that I make aren’t going to break the bank.
